In its heyday, the fort served as a Khan, offering refuge and provisions for Muslim pilgrims bound for Mecca, providing a vital rest stop along their journey. The Ottomans maintained control of the fortress until 1917, when it suffered significant damage from bombardment by the British Royal Navy during World War I. Above the main entrance, the Hashemite coat of arms stands proudly, a testament to the Arab Revolt that liberated Aqaba from the Turks rule.
